Philip Asher is currently working as an Assistant Headteacher in South West Cambridgeshire. He continues to maintain a schedule of performances and ad-hoc work with local churches and choirs. He is in demand as an accompanist for local choirs, and has a wide ranging and comprehensive repertoire. Additionally, he leads workshops and training days for local organisations on choir training and aspects of music in liturgy. He is a validated examiner for the RSCM and fulfils the role of Awards Administrator for the RSCM Ely Area, co-ordinating the examination sessions for the Cambridgeshire region.
Before moving to Cambridgeshire, he held the post of Director of Music at St George’s Church, Stockport where he worked with the two choirs to provide for the weekly needs of this busy parish church. He has previously held posts at St Ann's Church, Manchester as Pilling Trust Organ Scholar and subsequently Assistant Organist, and as Assistant Organist at Rotherham Minster. He is a prize-winning graduate of the RNCM, having studying with Darius Battiwalla, earning his BMus(Hons) degree and winning the Alice Shawcross Prize for Church Music and the Meadowcroft Exhibition Prize for Organ. He holds the Associate Diploma of the RCO.
At the RNCM, he served as harpsichordist to the School of Vocal Studies Period Performance class, directing a performance of Monteverdi’s Ballo della Ingrate with Philippa Hyde and vocal students. He was also part of the Education Project, venturing into local Primary Schools to teach piano to children in preparation for a concert at the college.
In the Manchester area, Philip worked with a number of local choral organisations, including choral societies, student societies and church choirs (the latter through his work with the RSCM). From 2006 to 2008 he was Musical Director of the Debrose Choir (now called Cantare), an SSA choir based in Rochdale, with whom he maintained a busy concert schedule. In 2007 they released their first CD recording, now available through the choir's website.
